WELCOME TO NEW NORCIA
by Gabi Anderson Courtney
New Norcia is Australia's only monastic town founded in 1847 by Spanish Benedictine Monks.
It is the perfect spot if want to escape from city life, but only just a little bit, and be back for a late lunch. So that's exactly what we did.
The town has had many purposes; a mission, a monastery, a provider of education and now as a place of spiritual retreat.
In reality, it is an amazing place to get lost for a bit, it feels really peaceful and soul soothing.
We decided to drive from Perth, so we are not bound by schedules, and then just wondered around, soaking up the peace and quiet. And shopped; the New Norcia bakery is one of the most famous ones in WA, as well as the wines that originate from here. (We picked up the obligatory champagne and shiraz.)
Finishing the day off with a late lunch back in Perth, we felt relaxed and rejuvenated.
